Talking out of Turn
- Create an attention signal that you teach all your students. This signal will let students know that they are being disrespectful and need to pay attention. (i.e. count down from 5, "thank you for letting me interrupt...)"
- Ensure students have adequate time to talk out loud with other students. Have students think-pair-share and participate in group work to allow time for their ideas to be heard.
- Pull disrupting students aside during an appropriate time to discuss problems and ways to fix them.
- Praise students who follow directions and raise their hand. This will show students what you are looking for in appropriate participation.
*If mutliple students are having issues with talking out of turn try this strategy: Give each student in the class two or three paper clips at the beginning of the day. Explain to them that if they ask or answer a question out of turn, they will lose a paper clip. The goal is to keep all of their paper clips throughout the day. Teachers could make this a competition and even have prizes for students who kept their paper clips throughout the day.
