Seclusion and Restraint

Seclusion and restraint should only be implemented in emergency situations as a last resort. They are both controversial issues in which there are very strict guidelines as to how they can be used. The Department of Michigan holds strict procedures as to when, how, and why an adult may use seclusion or restraint in a school.
Seclusion
Seclusion should be used only when a student is in danger of hurting himself or someone else. In elementary school, a student is placed in a room with adult supervision for up to fifteen minutes. The student is not allowed to leave for the designated duration of time. Seclusion is never used as a punishment or for a "time-out." This should only take place as a safety precaution when the student may be a threat to himself or other(s).
Restraint
Restraint is a technique used to control the movement of a specific student. This may include restraining a student's head, legs, arms, or entire body. Restraint should also only be used as a last resort when a student is a threat to himself of another person. Once a student has regained normalcy and control of his body, restraint may not be used. Restraint should never hurt a student or affect his ability to breathe.
