Bullying
Teachers must make it very clear that bullying is not tolerable in their class. Make sure students know that this includes both verbal and physical interaction. In order to prevent bullying from occurring, hold these expectations:
However, if bullying occurs:
- As a class at the beginning of the year, have all the students write a contract about the expectations of the class. (Teacher must ensure that bullying (respecting others) is part of the contract. Then have students sign the contract so that the teacher can reference back to it throughout the year as needed.
- Teachers need to model good anger management skills
- Hold NO tolerance for bullying
- TALK ABOUT IT! Don't pretend that bullying doesn't happen.
- Put bullying in curriculum, need to teach it!
- Teach with health,social studies, etc.
- Part of social skill discussions, activities, etc.
- Teach with health,social studies, etc.
However, if bullying occurs:
- Try to change the behavior of the bully by isolating the bullying behavior
- Remove bully from the environment, see they know why they are being excluded
- Have bully reflect on reasons for the isolation and write a letter home explaining what happened
- Teach bystanders how to safely intervene
- Don't let it go unnoticed!
