Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans

Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) should always be done prior to creating a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP). FBA is a process that is used to identify recurring poor behaviors of a student in the classroom. This purpose of this process is to determine the disrupting behavior(s) and also try to find reasons as to when and why the behavior occurs.
Once the FBA is complete, a Behavior Intervention Plan can be created. Behavior Intervention Plans are issued when a student's behavior patterns are affecting his or her ability to learn. The purpose of a behavior plan is to identify what the student's current behaviors are and determine how they can be changed. School Districts have different BIP forms, but the information and process is the same. Every BIP must identify the functions of behavior and be able to identify possible replacement behaviors. The reasons for the behavior must be noted as well. The replacement behaviors need to be taught to the student and reinforced. The BIP is a legally binding document, so it must be given and followed by all of the student's teachers. Behavior Plans are required for all students with emotional impairments, but are also made for some students with learning disabilities and students in the general education setting.
The steps to creating a Behavior Intervention Plan are as follows:
1. Functional Behavior Assessment is created
2. The target behavior(s) are identified. When writing a BIP, always look at behaviors that are physical or put people in danger first. Typically, only one target behavior is put on a BIP, but more can be used if deemed necessary.
3. Identify replacement behaviors. This the the behavior that is going to take the place of the poor behavior.
4. Create steps that will take place when the target behavior occurs after the BIP is implemented.
5. Crisis Plan is created.
